Following an international design competition, Transport NSW have recently confirmed the selection of the winning design for the Sydney Harbour Bridge Cycleway addition.
Collins and Turner are collaborating with team leaders Aspect Studios along with Yerrabingin, Eckersley O’Callaghan, Design 5 architects, Electrolight, and JMT consulting on the preparation of the design. The ambition of our proposal is to enable cross-harbour access for cyclists of all ages, with a design strategy that respects the historic Milsons Point and Harbour Bridge context and a new structure that meets the site with the lightest possible touch. On completion, the project will see the delivery of a major piece of active transport infrastructure for Sydney, whilst retaining, respecting and revealing spaces and forms already in place. The Country-centered design references the stories of journeys between Gadigal and Cammeraygal lands with a delicate skeletal structure inspired by the movement of marine life through the harbour waters. The announcement of the winning competition team completes a lengthy process of detailed option analysis by Transport NSW including extensive public consultation. The evaluation of alternative routes and arrangements has happened over a period of more than 20 years. In its 90th anniversary year, our team is thrilled to help author the next chapter of the story of one of the most iconic and recognisable pieces of transport infrastructure in the world.
